Summer Road Trip Tips

We are deep in the midst of summer, and that means it’s the perfect time to hop in your car with family and friends and drive into the mountains! However, it’s always a good idea to be well-prepared before a road trip. Here you’ll find some helpful tips on what to do and bring in case of some roadside emergencies.

Here are somethings to checkoff before you hit the road:

Schedule a Vehicle Maintenance

Regular vehicle maintenance will keep your car in tip-top shape, reduce engine-wear overtime and also improve your fuel economy! It can also highlight any current issues that should be addressed to ensure maximum safety and convenience, such as any suspension or braking problems.

Prepare an Emergency Kit

Sometimes the inevitable happens, so it’s best to be as prepared as you can be! Here are some items that can help you out when you find yourself in a roadside pinch:

1) Car Jack & Spare Tires: Did you know that flat tires ranks at one of the top most common roadside emergencies? Car jack and a spare tire is usually situated beneath the trunk of your car. If you need to purchase a new jack, ensure that it is able to support the weight of the vehicle.

Having a warning triangle will provide other drivers more visibility and increase both yours and their safety

2) Jumper Cables: Left your lights on by accident? Trust me, it happens to the best of us. Make sure you have jumper cables (of the right gauge too!) handy. Length-wise, usually a 20-feet cable will do.

3) Compact Fire Extinguisher: Vehicle fires account for 20% of reported fires, so it’s always a good idea be well-prepared. If the fire is caught early, it is handy to have a fire extinguisher on board.

Some other helpful and common emergency kit tools are:

- Flashlight

- Multi-tools (pliers, pocket knives etc.)

- Small first-aid kit

- Foldable shovel

- Tow straps

When You’re On the Road:

Travelling with pets can be great fun, but they can also be a major source of distraction!

Minimize distractions

Take precautions especially when travelling with pets and children. Pets should be leashed or kennelled, and children should be strapped into booster seats if required.

Prepare a playlist or audiobooks

Sometimes the drive gets boring, but dozing off at the wheel is extremely dangerous for everybody on board! During times like these, having your favourite playlist or audiobooks handy is a good way to stay awake and alert.

Have fun!

Summertime is one of the greatest opportunities to enjoy blissful drives with family and friends to exciting new places. Stay safe and have a good road trip!
